Comprehensive Vision and Eye Health Examinations
Regular eye exams are an invaluable tool in maintaining healthy eyes by detecting and preventing disease. Some diseases develop slowly without causing pain or vision loss. Early detection of any problems can reduce the risk of further harm and allow for a choice of treatment options. The entire exam process can take an hour depending on the complexity of the problem. Each patient will be evaluated with a refraction, slit lamp, intraocular pressure and a retinal exam.
Pediatric Eye Care
We take pride in maintaining the vision of our younger patients in an environment that is lighthearted and fun. We want to insure the good sight, vision, and eye health for the rest of your child's life and take a preventative approach to his/her general health and eye health. What To Expect During Your Eye Exam
- First you will be “pre-tested” by an ophthalmic assistant or technician. The “tech” will obtain various data about your eyes and vision as well as ask you many questions about your overall health and eye health. We also require a listing of all medications (prescribed and over the counter) as many medications may affect your eyes in various ways.
- Your vision is tested every time you come to our office. We also do a peripheral vision screening, check your pupils, color vision, and eye muscle function.
- Doctors use an instrument called a phoroptor to assess your eyeglass prescription and to test your visual function. This is the instrument that looks like a giant pair of glasses.
- The front or anterior health of your eyes is assessed using the slit lamp or biomicroscope. This is the instrument which resembles a microscope and has a bright light which shines into your eyes. Much of the back of the eye can be viewed with this instrument as well. This instrument is also used to check your eye pressure which is one of the components of glaucoma.
- Often, especially during your annual eye exam, dilating drops are instilled into your eyes to provide a more thorough evaluation of the back of your eyes. These drops enlarge the pupils for several hours and sunglasses are necessary to help you feel more comfortable in bright lighting. Many people need someone to drive after having their eyes dilated. Dilation may seem like an inconvenience but it is the best way to check the retina for signs of systemic disease as well as pathology in the back of the eye.
- Once all testing and evaluation are complete, the doctor will review findings and make recommendations about your eye health to you and provide all applicable eyeglass, contact lens and medical prescriptions that you may need.
- In many cases, we may also need to perform several other highly specialized diagnostic tests depending on your specific eye health needs (diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, etc.). These tests may include: fundus photography (photos of the inside of your eyes); Optic Nerve Scans for glaucoma patients; visual field testing; corneal topography (map of the front surface of the eye); as well as other tests to determine specific care regimens necessary to maintain your eye health.
- You may visit the optical shop any time during office hours.
- As always, we encourage you to ask questions throughout your experience with us. It is our honor and privilege to provide your eye care needs.
